AppAssure Replication ServerSoftware Solution of the month - App Assure Backup and Replication Solutions

Security Solution (tasks) of the month - Remote Wipe for Cell Phones and Tablets

Tablets and smart phones access more and more corporate data every day. But what happens to that corporate data when a device is lost? Simple usernames and passwords are not enough to protect data against theft when you device falls into unfreindly hands. Cloud service providers , like iCloud , provide ways for individuals to remotely KILL their device if it is lost. But this remote wipe function can be easily activated from your corporate ( Exchange ) email account too. Most IT administrators allow users to utilize Outlook Web Access, and most will leave the functions in place to allow a user to remotely KILL ( and manage ) their mobile device(s).

 

To perform remote wipe from Exchange Administation Console (Exchange 2010)

1. In the console tree, navigate to Recipient Configuration > Mailbox

2. Select the user from the Mailbox window.

3. In the action pane, click Manage mobile device, or right-click the user's mailbox, and then click Manage mobile device.

4. Select the mobile phone you want to clear all data from.

5. In the Actions section, click Clear.

6. Click Remove Device.

 

To perform remote wipe a device from Outlook Web Access. (Exchange 2010)

1. Log into OWA

2. Click OPTIONS in upper right corner.

3. In the Navigation Pane, select Phone.

4. Click the Mobile Phones tab

5. Select the ID of the mobile phone that you want to wipe and remove from the list.

6. Click Wipe device.

7. Click OK.

8. Click Remove Device.
